NRG Energy, operators of the Encina Power Plant in Carlsbad, want to modernize the plant, but several Carlsbad residents are fighting the project, according to KPBS. NRG Energy has applied to the California Energy Commission to replace three steam boiler units with a new 588-megawatt plant. The new facility would provide electricity to around 450,000 people. State energy commission staff have already recommended approving the project. Hearings for the proposal are scheduled to begin Feb. 1 in Carlsbad.

Farrah Douglas, the owner of CDS Printing in Carlsbad and vice-chair of the Carlsbad Planning Commission, was honored on Oct. 27 as a winner of the San Diego Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business” Award.

This award recognizes dynamic women business leaders and role models, selected for their business achievements, courage in the face of adversity, as well as their contributions to San Diego County’s non-profit organizations.

This year, San Diego Business Journal celebrated its 16th year of promoting and honoring women through this special award.  The Journal had received 167 nominations from some of the best and most influential women of San Diego County.

San Diego Business Journal honored Farrah as a business leader and role model. The citation read:  “Douglas has worked for 20 years as a community benefactor and leader. Aside from running CDS printing with her husband and devoting her time and energy to educational causes, she has served the city of Carlsbad as an active and respected business leader. She joined the chamber of Commerce in 1991 and has been a role model for the membership and the leadership team.”

“I’m grateful and honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award. I feel exhilarated and I’m humbled to be recognized among well-deserving and brilliant women of San Diego,” Farrah said.

Carlsbad approves moratorium on power plants PDF Print E-mail
San Diego Cities - Carlsbad
Wednesday, 21 October 2009 10:05
The Carlsbad City Council has approved an emergency moratorium on the building of power plants in its coastal zone and authorized city staff to research new options for the existing Encina Power Station Property, reported the North County Times. The ban goes into effect immediately and will last 45 days, with further extension added with council approval.  It is still unsure whether the ban will prevent the building of a proposed 558-megawatt power plant on the Encina Power Station property. An attorney for the power plant owner said the state has jurisdiction over power plant projects, not the city.
