Del Mar looks to extend rental tax PDF Print E-mail
San Diego Cities - Del Mar
Thursday, 25 February 2010 11:40
Del Mar voters will decide in June whether to charge people staying in vacation rental houses and duplexes the same transit occupancy tax charged to those staying in local hotels, according to the Union-Tribune. If voters approve, the extended tax would raise $181,000 annually to help pay for beach maintenance, fire safety and law enforcement.

Kehoe introduces Del Mar Greenway bill PDF Print E-mail
San Diego Cities - Del Mar
Friday, 19 February 2010 12:49

Sen. Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) introduced legislation today to establish the Del Mar Greenway along the San Dieguito River, and strengthen public safety in California.

Senate Bill 1177 requires the Del Mar Fairgrounds to develop and manage a minimum 100-foot-wide greenway along the north bank of the San Dieguito River, stretching from I-5 to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.  The greenway, which would include the extension of the Coast to Crest Trail through the Fairgrounds, must be completed by Jan. 1, 2014.

“So much work has been done in recent years by the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority to restore the river, and this legislation continues that great effort,” Kehoe said.  “The greenway would provide a permanent buffer between Fairground buildings and the river, restore natural wetlands, and ensure public access to this special state asset.”

Kehoe also introduced two bills to strengthen public safety in California.  The first measure, SB 1207, would require local governments to prevent wildfires through better land use planning for new housing developments.  Kehoe sponsored a similar bill last year, Senate Bill 505, which the Governor vetoed.

“It’s only common sense that if you incorporate fire prevention strategies when planning new housing developments, there’s a much better chance they won’t be destroyed in a wildfire,” Kehoe said.

Her second public safety measure would create a statewide 4.8 percent surcharge on home insurance policies to pay for new emergency response equipment and personnel costs.

“Given that much of California is at risk at one time or another of mudslides, floods, earthquakes, wildfires, or other disasters, it makes sense to ask all property owners to help pay for the emergency services we use every year,” Kehoe said.

San Diego Cities - Del Mar

The deadline to submit comments on the 4,500-page environmental study for a proposed Del Mar expansion ended last week with over 100 letters sent to the Del Mar Fairgrounds offices, according to the Union-Tribune. Many residents and government officials believe the review of the proposed expansion does not address environmental, financial and traffic issues with the project.

State Sen. Christine Kehoe criticized a plan yesterday to expand the Del Mar Fairgrounds by building a convention center, hotel and exhibition hall, reported the Union-Tribune. In an 11-page letter to the fairgrounds board, Kehoe said the environmental impact report fell short of protecting wildlife, and that there are serious concerns over how the $300 million project will be funded.

San Diego Cities - Del Mar
Thursday, 07 January 2010 11:05
After requests from elected officials, the Del Mar Fairgrounds has given the public one more month to review an environmental study of the massive renovations proposed for the fairgrounds, reported the Union-Tribune. The state 22nd District Agricultural Association, which operates the Del Mar Fairgrounds, has extended the deadline for comments on the 4,500-page draft environmental impact report from Jan. 8 to Feb. 8. Fairground officials said the deadline was moved after Sen. Christine Kehoe, San Diego Councilwoman Sherri Lightner, and the city of Del Mar sent written requests.
