Demolition begins at Santee's Edgemoor hospital PDF Print E-mail

Demolition crews began tearing down buildings at the old Edgemoor Hospital in Santee yesterday, according to the Union-Tribune. A contractor for the county demolished the first dozens of structures on the roughly 21-acre site. The demolition process is expected to take several months. A county report issued earlier this year said the facility's buildings, built between 1913 and 1961, were deteriorated and obsolete. It said the buildings could pose a fire danger and attract illegal activity. Two buildings will be preserved, including an old polo barn that is on the National Register of Historic Places.

A large addition to one of Santee's city parks has been delayed a few months and will cost $800,000 more than planned a year ago, according to the Union-Tribune. The latest phase of the city's Town Center Community Park is now expected to be open in February at a cost of more than $23.5 million. The project was slated to be done before the end of the year, but officials say unexpected work, unstable soil and inclement weather has caused a delay. The project is the second largest and costliest in the city's history.
